Fellows, resident, community engagement director join UMMC faculty
Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Himanshu Adlakha, M.B.B.S.
Dr. Himanshu Adlakha, recently a pediatric cardiology fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics.
After earning his M.B.B.S. at Maharaja Agrasen Medical College, Hisar, Haryana, India, in 2011, Adlakha served as a research assistant in the Department of Cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, from 2012-13 before having pediatrics residency training from 2013-16 at Flushing Hospital and Medical Center, New York. He then had his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Icahn from 2016-19.
Adlakha is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The author or coauthor of multiple articles in peer-reviewed professional publications, he has given oral presentations at scientific meetings nationally. His clinical interests are trans-thoracic and fetal echocardiography and his research interests includes obesity in adult congenital heart disease.
Tammy J. Dempsey, Ed.D.
Dr. Tammy Dempsey, director of the Office for Community Engagement and Service Learning at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of nursing and assistant dean of students in the School of Nursing.
After receiving her B.S. in sociology in 1990 and her Master of Social Work Generalist Practice in 1993 from the University of Southern Mississippi, Dempsey served as program coordinator of an infant learning program at the North Slope Borough Department of Health and Social Services, Barrow, Alaska from 1993-94, as a social work coordinator for the Institute for Disability Studies at USM from 1994-98 and as a social worker for Associated Catholic Charities, New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1999-2000. She served as director of student and administrative services from 2000-08 and instructor of sociology from 2000-10 at William Carey University, New Orleans, from 2000-08 while concurrently earning her M.A. in Christian Education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 2003.
In 2010, Dempsey came to UMMC as director of student affairs and service learning and became director of the Office for Community Engagement and Service Learning in 2015. She received her Ed.D. from the University of Mississippi in 2018. She has given four presentations at scientific meetings internationally.
David Weiland, M.D.
Dr. David Weiland, recently a pediatric and congenital electrophysiology fellow in the Duke University Health System, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics.
After receiving his B.S. in biology cum laude from the University of Mississippi in 2008, Weiland earned his M.D. at UMMC in 2012. He then had residency training in the Department of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center from 2012-15. Following this, he pursued clinical fellowship in pediatric cardiology from 2015-18 and fellowship in congenital electrophysiology from 2017-19 in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology in the Duke University Health System.
An active member of the American Association of Pediatrics, Weiland has given two invited presentations at scientific meetings and is the author or coauthor of two articles in peer-reviewed professional publications.
Carrie Shumaker Wynn, M.D.
Dr. Carrie Shumaker Wynn, recently an internal medicine resident at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in medicine.
After receiving her B.A. in psychology magna cum laude from Baylor University, Waco, Texas, in 2011, Wynn earned her Masters of Biomedical Science in 2012 and her M.D. in 2016 at UMMC, where she had her internal medicine residency training from 2016-19.
An active member of the American College of Physicians and the Mississippi State Medical Association, Wynn has authored or coauthored one article in a peer-reviewed professional publication, six posters presented at scientific meetings and one journal club presentation. She is currently participating in research regarding loss aversion associated with designated cancer survivorship.
